On February 21, 2009, Saint Benedict Parish of
Fontana, Wisconsin will host its fourth annual Mardi Gras Night for the benefit
of providing assistance for youth programs of St. Benedict's Parish and to
support our sister parish, Our Lady of Lourdes. Since Katrina, St. Benedict has donated
over $110,000; almost half of this has been raised through our annual Mardi Gras
Night. A portion of that money has enabled St. Benedict to sponsor three
mission trips to Slidell over the past three years which sent 109 adults and youth
from the community. Most has been used to equip temporary classrooms with
furniture and educational items as well as other parish facilities.
During the first mission trip in January, 2006, several public school teachers relieved the teachers at Our Lady of Lourdes School so they could tend to their insurance matters or just take time with their families after the storm. We also worked on several homes, personal and church grounds, and boulevard clean-up during all three trips to Slidell. Even after two years of rebuilding much more work is still needed; even basic needs are still not being met.
